Course Objectives:
Research indicates that 88% of trafficked individuals will engage with medical professionals while being trafficked. This presentation will assist healthcare professionals to understand how to identify human trafficking in the healthcare setting and how to respond in a trauma informed manner.
- Discuss the context of labor and human trafficking.
- Explore crisis skills and other trauma specific interventions to assist patients who experience past and/or current trauma due to human trafficking.
- Gain skills to respond to survivors in a trauma informed manner.
Presented by Keyna Smith, Project STAR (Sex Trafficking, Advocacy, and Recovery) Coordinator, Cleveland Rape Crisis Center
Keyna Smith is a passionate advocate with over 15 years experience working with community based mental health and social service agencies. In her current position, she assists recovered victims of sex and labor trafficking and connects them with community resources throughout Northeast Ohio. Smith serves as a member on the Northeast Ohio Regional Human Trafficking Taskforce and the Cuyahoga County Safe Harbor Advisory Board, as a co-chair of the Crisis Response & Intervention Committee for the Collaboration to End Human Trafficking and as chair for the Human Trafficking Committee for the Cuyahoga County Sexual Assault Response Team (SART).
Smith's passion is to assist individuals navigating the legal system by providing educational trainings and advocacy. A Cleveland State University graduate with a degree in Psychology, Smith is currently completing her MSSA work at Case Western Reserve University.
