Course Objectives:

Body image is a growing concern in our society, and it can lead to eating disorders.  The focus of this presentation will be to help addictions counselors and other mental health professionals raise their awareness of how distorted body image can affect a person’s life and the impact it may have on mental health when working with addictions.  This will be done through examining various eating disorders and how they relate to body image.

  • Provide a basic understanding and overview of the various types of eating disorders
  • Discuss “normal” body image and what it means 
  • Learn the 7 perspectives on body image

Katherine McMahon, MSSA, LISW-S
The Emily Program

Katherine McMahon is the Director of CBT-E at The Emily Program’s Cleveland Outpatient location. She is a licensed social worker providing therapy to adults struggling with eating and mood disorders in both an outpatient setting and in higher levels of care. McMahon specializes in the treatment of adults with Binge Eating Disorder and body image work, however she provides care for adults with a variety of eating disorders using both a CBT-E and CBT based approach. In addition to providing individual therapy, she also runs an outpatient body image group and an outpatient binge eating disorder skills group. With The Emily Program, McMahon has been collaborating with a multi-disciplinary team including psychiatrists, dietitians, and medical professionals to enhance programing and help clients.
